Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín
★ ★ ★
Brooklyn follows a young Irish woman called Eilis, who moves to America post WWII to pursue work. She finds a job in a department store and falls in love with an Italian boy called Tony, taking the focus of the story from the search for the American Dream to an unexpected Romance.
This book made for a very pleasant read. A sweet story with likeable characters, Brooklyn is a perfect rainy day read for when you are not after anything too exciting - just some quiet entertainment. In saying this, not a lot happened throughout the book, and I found myself having to really push through some parts, but it definitely pulled at the heartstrings.
I enjoyed the book a lot more than the movie. The background information provided in the book is necessary for the depth of the story - so if you have the option, read this first.
Pleasant, simple and quiet were really the keywords for this read. Recommended for the right setting!
