"That's what 15 minutes can do to a person. It can destroy them."
I have so much I want to say about this book. It Ends With Us is a story of love and friendship as much as it is about nostalgia and so. much. pain. Although I can't say too much about the plot without giving it away, it reflects a personal story of Colleen Hoover's, which I think is a reason why it i so heart-wrenching.
Beginning with one of the best first chapters I have read, I immediately fell in love with the characters and developed a strong understanding of their personality. From the start I could feel every emotion they did, and was ready to dive into their story. The first half of the novel was light and fun, and completely enjoyable (almost like watching a chick-flick), yet I admit I was worried it lacked depth and would remain that way.
Come the second half, this book tore me apart. My heart rate was up, and I couldn't stop turning the pages. I almost feel guilty for questioning the depth of the book, because by the end, as devastating as it was, it had blown me away.
I highly recommend this book. I was astounded by Hoover's ability to draw the reader in and entangle them in the complexity of the characters and their story. I also think the way she blended a very colloquial writing style with such a deep issue was done extremely well, as it is a difficult combination to get right.
